Project Comet

The Comet Project was started just as the Earth-Romulan War ended. It was tasked to design a vessel that was easy to build and contain the new Warp 7 reactor as well as weapon and other system upgrades that were developed during the war. Starfleet felt it was easier to construct a whole new vessel rather than try to keep retrofitting the NX class and other older designs.

The Comet was launched a year before the founding of the Federation in early 2160 and several more were added to the fleet by the time the Federation Charter was signed in 2161. Starfleet suspend further builds of the class as it had began Project Daedalus, which was a project designed to develop a new deep space explorer not only using the Warp 7 reactor but also incorporating other technologies from around the Federation.

Here we see the USS Meteor and the SS Enterprise heading to the Utopia Planetia maintenance and supply station in orbit of Mars. The Meteor needs to take on supplies before heading out to patrol the Romulan Neutral Zone and the Enterprise is due to have all her photon torpedoes, supplies and fuel removed before heading to a specially constructed museum facility in synchronous orbit above Bozeman, Montana on the North American continent of Earth.
