Wow, I never thought a Vulcan ship was that large compared to a federation ship! (Unless there is distancing going on.)

The Archer class is a scout, about 50m long

Yeah, someone told me about that. Just wondering: What is the smallest federation ship that isn't a shuttle?

I think it is the smallest vessel to be classed as a starship. I'm trying to remember what novel series they are from

The Archer-class is a tiny vessel, one could land in a Constitution-class hanger bay, though it would be a very tight fit.

Ah, that explains it then. Is it the smallest Federation vessel that doesn't class as a shuttle?

Basically, yes!

The Archer-class is larger than a shuttle, with three decks (two main, one cargo), and has a crew compliment of fifteen.  It's maximum warp speed, in TNG scale, is Warp nine.
The class was named for Jonathan Archer, and is a highly maneuverable long range scout vessel, with its small size making it hard to detect with sensors.

The class first turned up in the Star Trek: Vanguard novels, the ship being the USS Sagittarius.  Her first officer was Cmdr. Clarke Terrell (future captain of THE USS Reliant).
The Sagittarius is now appearing in Star Trek: Seekers alongside the USS Endeavour.  She is now under Terrell's command.

Google 'Archer-class deck plans' to get more information.

Wow, its tiny! I wonder how many of these would take up a hollow Borg ship!

RobCaswell on this site has done some excellent artwork on this tiny ship, and Unusualsuspex has done some ortho's.

That's a hard one to answer!  It's smaller than a Defiant-class, so I'm guessing a lot.

Also, the Archer-class has the ability to land on a planet, and take off again, a function that Starfleet didn't return to until the Intrepid-class in the 2370's!

There are quite a few pics if the class on this site.

Would that mean it would count as a semi-shuttle?

I believe that it had to land since its only transporter pad was for emergency use only (and cargo).

Despite its small size, it is counted as a true starship as, unlike TOS shuttles it has weapons (phasers and torpedoes), and can reach warp 9 (TNG scale).  Shuttles lacked weapons, and only had limited warp capability, if any.
